Hurricane season · Miami
When a storm is coming, your website is the first thing customers check.
Not your door, and usually not your phone. Nine things worth checking before the next one — most of them you can do yourself this afternoon, without hiring anybody.
The checklist
Nine things, in the order they will matter.
- 01
You can change your hours yourself, today
Not by emailing whoever built the site and hoping. If you cannot edit your own hours in under ten minutes, that is the single thing to fix before the next storm.
- 02
Your homepage can carry a notice at the top
One line, above everything else: closed, reopening Thursday, or open with reduced hours. It should not require a redesign to add.
- 03
Your phone number is tappable on a phone
Printed as plain text it cannot be dialled. During a storm a phone number that has to be copied out by hand is a phone number nobody uses.
- 04
Google shows the same hours as your site
Your Google Business Profile is what most people actually see. If it disagrees with your website, customers arrive at a closed door and Google trusts you less afterwards.
- 05
Someone other than you can update it
If you are dealing with a flooded storeroom, the person who can post the notice should not have to be you.
- 06
Your site is not hosted in the storm's path
A site served from the cloud stays up whether or not your building has power. One served from a box in the back office does not.
- 07
Your contact form goes somewhere you will read
Not to an address nobody has opened since 2019. Test it by sending yourself one today.
- 08
Your social links actually work
When the site is the slowest thing to update, social becomes the fastest. The link from one to the other should not be broken.
- 09
You know your own login
The most common failure of all. Find out now, while nothing is happening, whether you can get into your own website.
For the storm itself
This page is only about your website. For forecasts, evacuation zones and shelters, go to the people whose job that is:
Free, and no pitch attached
We will add a storm notice to your site. No charge.
One line at the top of your homepage that you can switch on and off — closed, reopening, or open with changed hours. If we can add it to your existing site we will, whoever built it, and it costs you nothing. If we cannot, we will tell you why in plain English.
- Works on whatever your site is built on, where possible
- You control it — switch it on and off yourself
- No charge, and no obligation afterwards
